It's a wonder how I never got a glimpse of the Kingdom. All I knew is we drove for some time before we turned up a winding road. I sat on the edge of my seat, unblinking. Using all my might to focus through the darkness that wouldn't let me prevail. I wanted to know what this mysterious place of horrors looked like, but I was not permitted to. I don't know what I was expecting. In my mind, I saw lights and signs pointing to this monstrosity, but none of that was waiting for us. Just the night sky and some hardly legible shapes.
When they tell me we're here and that I can get out, I'm in disbelief. How can we be somewhere that I can't see?
We exit the vehicle; I stay close to the Elleryâs sides. It's eerie walking up the path lit with small objects that stick out of the grass lighting the way to nowhere. I know the Kingdom is right ahead of us. I can feel the vibrations from it, but there's nothing to see.
âI'm disappointed,â I tell them both. âI expected some grand ovation. I thought this place would be spectacular, but I can't see a thing.â
âOnly because it's so late darling,â Wenzel says. âIn the morning time, this place is spectacular.â
âWhere are the lights at? I just don't understand. Shouldn't this place be heavily guarded?â
âIt is,â Arabella whispered, grabbing my elbow, telling me to keep my voice down. âThere's a wall all around us.â
âBut I didn't see any wall,â irritation was rising from the confusion. âI just don't understand.â
âThe side entrance was open for us, that's why. It's there, believe me.â
âAnyone,â I hushed my voice so I wouldn't be heard. âCould get through this. I could be darting across his property right now, and he would never know it.â
I could faintly see her shaking her head at my response, trying to convey in a way that I could understand how dire the situation was, but I didn't grasp it. âThis path that we're on right now was designed tonight for a reason. There are reasons that no one strays from it. The gate is open right now so that the Court may enter, but no one besides the Court is permitted. If guards don't catch whoever tries to sneak in, then they will find themselves dead either way.â
âBut what's out there?â Grasping to no avail for answers to the unknown.
âTraps.â She said.
âBombs?â My eyes go wide.
âOf course not,â Wenzel answers my question. âNo bombs.â
âBut what about when the gate isn't open for this long of a time, is there still traps placed out?â
âNo. Just on events where the Sire feels the matter should have more than just manpower looking out for his Kingdom.â
âWhy doesn't he have cameras stationed around his walls and inside his home then?â I asked a question that popped up in my head. I've never had to deal with cameras. I never knew what they were until it was decided that I would come here.
